Service Opportunities
Young lawyers are essential to providing pro bono legal services to the poor and indigent. The mission of the JYL Pro Bono Committee is to encourage and facilitate pro bono legal services among members of JYL and all young lawyers. The Pro Bono Committee has partnered with the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project (“MVLP”) to promote and encourage young attorneys to take cases from the Project’s active case list. Additionally, the Pro Bono Committee hopes to encourage pro bono service with other legal services organizations, including the Mission First Legal Clinic and the Stewpot Homeless Legal Clinic. Since all Mississippi lawyers are encouraged to provide at least 20 hours of pro bono service to the poor annually, the Pro Bono Committee hopes to serve as an information source for all JYL members seeking pro bono opportunities. Ultimately, young lawyers not only provide invaluable assistance to those otherwise unable to afford legal representation, but they also gain great practical experience and have the opportunity to contribute to our profession and society when they provide pro bono legal services.
For more information regarding current pro bono opportunities or to join the JYL’s Pro Bono Committee, contact Pro Bono Committee Co-Chairs Brent Cole or Erin Guyton.
Community Outreach Grant
JYL’s annual Community Outreach Grant helps meet Jackson’s extraordinary public service needs. Our Grant Committee works hard each year to solicit applications from area non-profit organizations that present opportunities for JYL to give back to our community. The Grant Committee and Executive Committee carefully analyze the grant applications to identify the proposed project(s) that make the most meaningful positive impact in our community. Applications are solicited and submitted beginning in January, with the selection occurring in April, and the grant awarded at JYL’s May membership meeting. More information about this years grant application process can be found here.
